Updating the privacy settings of a contest doesn't really **update** the user's end until they logout (refreshing the page doesn't work). I don't know if it's intentional and in my opinion it shouldn't be. Whatever the reason is I think contest managers should be aware of the situation.

For contests those are initially set to **private**, if we update the settings to anything else and someone has already opened the contest page, he/she needs to relogin in order to propagate the changes. This is not that big of a deal as we can always do some extra work.

But updating a contest from **public** to **private** is kind of a serious matter. Once users load the contest page (even before the contest begins) while it's still public, regardless of a change in settings they are able to see the problems and even submit solutions as long as they don't logout.

If it's a bug, I hope it will be fixed soon. In the mean time, be aware of the openness settings at the time of creating a contest.
